CLINICAL CARE

Access to affordable, quality, and timely health care can help prevent diseases and detect issues sooner, enabling individuals to live longer healthier lives. Healthcare access and quality also vary widely both by place and by race, ethnicity, and income.

In the Clinical Care area of the County Health Rankings, we look at:

  • Access to Care, including measures such as a community's number of primary care providers and dentists per number of residents.
  • Quality of Care, with measures of preventing hospital visits and disease monitoring.

HEALTH BEHAVIORS

Health behaviors are actions individuals take that affect their health. They include actions that lead to improved health, such as eating well and being physically active, and actions that increase one's risk of disease, such as smoking, excessive alcohol intake, and risky sexual behavior.

In the Health Behaviors area of the County Health Rankings we look at:

  • Tobacco Use, looking at the percentage of adult smokers.
  • Diet & Exercise, giving information on access to healthy foods ad exercise opportunities.
  • Alcohol & Drug Use, measuring excessive drinking and drug overdose deaths.
  • Sexual Activity, showing rates of sexually transmitted infections and teen births.

HEALTH OUTCOMES

Health Outcomes represent how healthy a county is right now. They reflect the physical and mental well-being of residents within a community through measures representing not only the length of life but the quality of life as well.

In the Health Outcomes area of the County Health Rankings we look at:

  • Length of Life, measuring premature death and life expectancy.
  • Quality of Life, with measures of low birthweight and those who rated their physical or mental health as poor.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

The Physical Environment is where individuals live, learn, work and play. People interact with their physical environment through the air they breathe, water they drink, the houses they live in, and the transportation they access to travel to work and school. Our collective health and well-being depend on opportunities for everyone.

In the Physical Environment area of the County Health Rankings we look at:

  • Air & Water Quality, providing information on the safety of the air and water for a community.
  • Housing & Transit, look at those in a community who face housing burdens such as high housing costs, lack of modern plumbing or internet and overcrowding or those who have a long commute to work.

SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS

Social and Economic Factors, such as income, employment, community safety and social support can significantly affect how well and how long we live. These factors affect our ability to make health choices, afford medical care and housing, manage stress and more. The social and economic opportunities we have, such as good schools, stable jobs and strong social networks are foundational to achieving long and healthy lives.

In the Social and Economic Factors area of the county Health Rankings, we look at:

  • Education, shows who in a community has graduated high school or attended some college in addition to the percentage of teens and young adults ages 16-19 who are neither working nor in school.
  • Employment, detailing unemployment statistics.
  • Income, looking at children in poverty and income inequality.
  • Family & Social Support, providing information on children in single-parent households and access to social opportunities.
  • Community Safety, measuring violent crime and injury deaths.
